Understanding Palliative Care and Hospice

Palliative care is a category of medical specialties. However, it's also a term often used to categorize any treatment that is intended to alleviate symptoms rather than cure a disease. This can be confusing, because, as a category, all hospice care is palliative care, but not all palliative care is hospice care. Both palliative care and hospice care prove very valuable for the right patients. In short, hospice is best for patients in an advanced stage of a terminal disease, when reasonable curative treatment options have been exhausted or are no longer desired, and when a patient's goals have shifted more toward quality of life. Home visits through Aspen's palliative care program are for patients in earlier stages of chronic disease, when symptom management could benefit from more attention than is normal for other care settings. Let's breakdown the differences.
