Stroke ranks as one of the leading causes of death and disability. The American Stroke Association states that knowing the signs of a stroke can save lives. By learning the acronym F.A.S.T, we can quickly tell if someone is developing a stroke.

F – Face Drooping- One side of the face may droop or become numb. If the person has trouble smiling, this may be a sign.

A – Arm Weakness – One arm may become weak or numb. While holding both arms up straight, the person may experience an uneven balance between arms.

S – Speech Difficulty- Speech may be slurred or completely lost. Ask the person to complete a simple sentence.

T – Time to call 911 – If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if they go away, 911 needs to be called. The person needs to go to the hospital immediately.

Other signs or symptoms can include confusion, trouble seeing, difficulty walking or feeling dizzy, or a severe headache.
