Preventing Kidney Stones

A glass of water with text "Preventing Stones"

Anyone who has ever had a kidney stone will surely remember it. The
pain can be unbearable, coming in waves until the little stone passes through
the urinary tract and out of the body. For many people, kidney stones are not a
one-time thing. According to the American Urological Association, urinary
stones are estimated to affect up to 12% of the United States population.

There is no one sure way to prevent kidney stones, especially if there
is a family history of the condition. A combination of diet and lifestyle
changes, as well as some medications, may help reduce the risk.

Preventing kidney stones means preventing the conditions that support
the formation. There are some diet tips to help avoid kidney stones. Here are a
few:

• Drink enough fluids each day

• Eat less meat

• Reduce the amount of salt in the diet

• Eat the recommended amount of calcium

• Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables

Changing diet and increasing fluids may not be enough to stop stones from forming. Kidney stones are common. There is no guarantee that prevention methods will work. Consult with a health care provider to discuss the best methods of prevention.
